“Have you heard? Wu Wuping wins a national gold medal for voluntary blood donation.” “It’s amazing. I only knew he was a fishing enthusiast, but I did not realize he was such a good Samaritan. It’s not easy to donate blood 130 times in 19 years.” These days, Wu Wuping, an employee in Guangxi Dahua Power Branch, has become the focus of everyone’s discussion. He is not a man of many words. When he was about to retire, it happened by chance that his good deeds for 19 years were known by colleagues around him.

Over the past 19 years, he has donated 8,800 ml of whole blood in 24 times and 210 therapeutic doses of platelets in 106 times, with 50,800 ml of blood donated cumulatively. He became the first person in terms of donated blood volume in Baise City, winning the honorary title of “National Gold Award for Voluntary Blood Donation” three times.

Behind these moving figures is the extraordinary feelings of an ordinary man.

Wu Wuping, 55, an ordinary employee of the water supply team of the power branch, talks little but works diligently. However, such a silent, seemingly insignificant person did persistent dedication to the society with his true feelings and positive energy.

When it comes to the original intention of blood donation, Wu Wuping, an honest man, said: “At first, I was afraid of pain and dizziness, and I had a lot of worries, so I was hesitant to participate in blood donation. But then I really tried it and realized that it really made sense to do so.” On October 10, 2001, Wu Wuping took the first step to donate blood under the organization of his unit. He mustered up the courage to donate 400 ml of blood together with his colleague. After donating blood, he found nothing unusual about his body and his previous doubts were completely dispelled. “In that case, let’s keep this going as long as we can.” Since then, Wu’s “journey of love” has been unstoppable.

On the third day of the Chinese Lunar New Year in 2012, a patient was in critical need of platelets just as people were celebrating the Spring Festival. At the critical moment, Baise City Blood Center contacted Lao Wu. He did not hesitate to hurry to the blood donation site in the shortest possible time. After a series of checks and tests, he donated two therapeutic doses of single donor platelets, and the patient was able to turn his life around.

From 2001 till now, Wu Wuping has gone through 19 years of voluntary blood donation. To better help others, he joined the Baise Task Force for Blood Donation Volunteer Services, serving as a blood donation volunteer. He used himself as an example to disseminate the knowledge of blood donation among people around him and mobilize more people to engage in the blood donation team. He has regarded blood donation as an important part of his life, devoting infinite love and enthusiasm to it.
In October 2020, Wu would retire. But he said, “No matter where I am, I will always go on the road of blood donation.”

“I hope that, through my efforts, I can help medical workers save more lives.” This was Wu’s original intention to donate blood. It is with such an original aspiration that he has persevered for 19 years and continues to do so with determination. Wu said, “As long as my physical conditions allow, I will insist on donating blood until the legal maximum age for donation.”
